Propylene Glycol Water Chiller
This model is used for a brewery factory. Here are some questions belows:
1. Can a glycol chiller be used as a brewery chiller?
Yes, propylene glycol chiller can be used as brewery chillers because propylene is food standard glycol, non-corrosive and harmless.
2. Why use a brewery chiller instead of a refrigerator?
Using refrigerators to cool beer products, which may taste like water or bitterness, beer coolers are essential to develop the taste of beer products.
3. What is the cooling stage of a beer cooler used for?
During the cooling phase, the hot wort is cooled very rapidly to avoid the production of microorganisms.
4. Does the beer cooler do the cooling stage for the wort?
During the wort cooling stage, the coolant circulates through the hot wort in the coils that emerge in the hot wort; this coolant absorbs heat through it to the atmosphere.
5. Why is it necessary to quickly cool wort with a brewery chiller?
We need to cool the wort quickly to ensure the survival of the yeast and avoid contaminating growth.

There are several parameters to consider when choosing a coolant for a chiller. The liquid chosen should be chemically compatible with the wetted parts of the equipment to avoid corrosion and other damage. It should have a workable viscosity and a sufficiently low freezing point at the desired operating temperature. Its freezing temperature needs to be significantly lower than the cooling temperature (at least 20°C), as the temperature inside the cooling unit can be much lower than the set temperature.
When the required cooling system requires a temperature below 10°C, it is recommended not to use water anymore. Instead, ethanol or methanol can be used because they are non-viscous, non-corrosive and have very low boiling points.
Alternatively, ethylene glycol can be used. It is more versatile than alcohol or water because of its low freezing temperature and high boiling point. In addition, its natural freezing temperature of -12°C can be reduced to -45°C by producing 60% ethylene glycol and 40% aqueous solution.
The downside is that ethylene glycol is toxic, so precautions should be taken when handling, storing, and disposing of it. To avoid this, propylene glycol can be used instead. It has comparable thermal properties but is less toxic than ethylene glycol. Best mixed with water in a 50/50 ratio. Care should be taken when heating a propylene glycol solution as it will oxidize and form a corrosive acid. Once the solution turns red, it should be replaced.
A glycol-water solution can also be used, although it is more viscous but not toxic. The freezing point of a 65% glycerol/35% water solution is approximately -37°C.
